Retro Review - "From Beyond" by Massacre EXCLUSIVE by MARTYR - X at ONE MISSED REEL BLOG SPOT

This review is from Martyr - X blog spot titled One Missed Reel blog spot, check it out here!

Massacre - "From Beyond"
Release Information:
Artist - Massacre
Album - "From Beyond"
Released - March 1991
Label - Earache Records
Genre - Death Metal

Track 1: "Dawn Of Eternity"
The opening track to Massacre's debut album "From Beyond" is a perfect way to open up this album as it gives you a clear idea of what you in store for, and that's a pure old skool late 80's/early 90's Death Metal classic. The opening of the track start with a slow start filled with wind and ambience and a opening ryff that feels like it would start off a cinematic fight piece in hell. From there on in the rest of the track rages into a solid fast thrash paced piece that has become the standard for all death metal.

Track 2: "Cryptic Remains"
"Cryptic Remains" is a perfect example (and my personal favorite track off "From Beyond") that metal music doesn't have to be compiled of complicated ryffs and off timing to be great metal. The great thing about this track is that although the ryffs are simplistic, the song is absolutely crushing nonetheless and showcases what the late 80's & early 90's were all about. The opening ryff is pure old skool thrash and quickly turns into a very crushing, yet simple, unforgiving evil ryff the commands your attention and leaves you unable to control that grin appear on your face once you hear it. Along with the double bass drums behind it, the main verse section is one of best sections in old metal, PERIOD. The vocals on this track, although the vocal style never changes throughout the album, is probably the best death metal vocals not just for the time, but even to this day. Not to mention that the solo on this track is absolutely killer and sounds like something of classic metal magic. Including the chorus & bridging ryffs, "Cryptic Remains" is not only probably one of the best death metal tracks i've heard, it's probably one of the best metal songs, period, that has been recorded.

Track 3: "Biohazard"
"Biohazard" starts out quick and to the point that Massacre know's how to play fast and play fast well. But the "Chorus" ryff is actually a pretty catchy ryff and yet again, shows that great ryffs don't have to be complicated. After going back and forth from the speed multiple speedy ryffs, at around the 2 and a half minute mark Massacre slams you with a abrupt slowing down that is very welcomed right before kicking it right back into high gear with not only traditional death metal one string speed picking but also a equally fast paced solo that all the speed lovers will love.

Track 4: "Chamber Of Ages"
In an interesting approach, "Chamber Of Ages" starts out as if its an intro to a whole other album. The first minute plus os this song is a very epic feel as if it were opening an epic battle from a fantasy or gladiator fight. At the conclusion of said opening its apparent that the band isn't slowing down, just merely giving you a breather. The 1st ryff kicks in full throttle and the double bass drum assault on your eardrums is on. The rest of the song, although not fancy or anything new, is a very enjoyable piece of speed & aggression. Most enjoyable part here for me is at 3:07 when a ryff starts in that you just know caused some mayhem in the pit when it started.

Track 5:  "From Beyond"
The title track of the album starts out with a pretty standard guitar/bass opening, but what really catches your ears here are the drums. Nothing too fancy but there is a very nice drum solo-esque pattern going on. It's always enjoyable to hear a band who's drummer can actually play and not just be limited to beating the double bass drums out, although there is plenty of that, but im sure metal fans are fine with that. Sadly, for being the title track of the album, "From Beyond" isn't really anything special. But it is an enjoyable listen though.

Track 6: "Defeat Remains"
Here we are with another perfect example of simplicity sells. Straight out the get you get greeted with a more groove metal type track as here, the music on the track isn't really death metal, more like a great groove metal track with death metal vocals mixed in. Also at times, very reminiscent of the great Carcass. It's a great combination and a very enjoyable track to hear and would be a great driving tune.

Track 7: "Succubus"
"Succubus" opens up with a fast death/black metal ryff that is greeted with a more higher pitched scream when everything kicks in than we're used to on this album. This song, not really that many change ups, this song remains pretty much a fast pace all the way till the end. Nothing standout worthy on this track sadly.

Track 8: "Symbolic Immorality"
Straight forward death right here. Nothing fancy all the way up to 1:30 where everything fades out and the bass comes into the spotlight real quick with a nice little bass line with the guitars and drums kicking back in to deliver a pretty crushing ryff then after that section has done it's job its right back to speedy death metal.

Track 9: "Corpse Grinder" (Death cover)
Massacre closes out their debut album with a cover of Death's (which Massacre's vocalist was originally part of) is a cover of an early death song that was on Death's "Reign Of Terror" demo. The very beginning of this track is very reminiscent of someone having a psychotic break from reality from a horror flick with the guitars just being screeched and detuned to death. Once we get kicked in to the actual song, "Corpse Grinder" is absolute pure death metal with speed picking, speed drumming and lyrics about necrophilia, pure and simple. For old skool Death fans (The Band and the genre) and lovers of messed up lyrics. this track is for you.

Track 10: "Provoked Accurser" (Vinyl Release)
"Provoked Accurser" for some reason only found it's way onto the Vinyl version of the album originally. Which i cant understand cause this track starts off with another great Simplicity Sells example. The opening section reminds me of something you would find on Carcass' "Swan Song" or "Wake Up & Smell The Carcass", it's a great metal track with a great groove metal-esque opening then turns to thrash for mostly the remainder and going back to the opening ryff once or twice and has a very quickly played but not too shabby solo followed by another GREAT groove metal section that destroys and finishes off on a very thrash note.

Overall Rating: 9.5/10
Standout Tracks: "Cryptic Remains", "Defeat Remains", "Provoked Accurser"
Final Verdict: Classic

Nåe interview with Elenyx (new)

(Interview with Elenyx!!! old interview, but just got the chance to post it! )
WELCOME TO TRANSYLVANIAN FOREST E-ZINE!!! how you been, and how was your holidays??? :)
Greetings!
All good, working as always, been busy lately with music-related work and have many projects that I have gotten involved in, but am not complaining- creative work is always good!
1)When did your band start and why???
The idea about Nåe started years ago as it grew from my work with poetry and lyrics together with my art. I made some tracks back then but it was not till last year I putted it all together and made the Nåe project official

2)What is the meaning behind your band, and what instruments do you play?
The meaning is as always.. just to create. I create in all ways I can ,and making music for me are in periods just as nescessary as it is to paint and draw, music is an expression from the inner and then the meaning is just to create and express myself, nothing more
I play all instruments and do vocals, on "Helvetespeilene" Svartalv added synth and Pr. Sergiy from Moloch played the drums
3)What does your band name mean?
Nåe is a old norwegian word meaning corpse or the dead
Nålys is a pale blue light that predicts death

4)Are you signed on any labels? and what albums have you released so far?
The album will be released during 2011 through Concept Machine
http://conceptmachine-ia.com/

5) If you were to describe your sound, how would you describe it or define it?
Unpolished and raw, just like my feelings and thoughts and myself in all I am probably

6) Will it become a live act? and what other things do you do besides making music with your band?
IF I ever do a live act with Nåe that will be for a very limited audience, under special circumstances ..time will tell

7)Are you the only member? do you colloborate with others? or wish too?
I am the creator of Nåe, but have been working together with Svartalv and Moloch on one track, I also have involved one more musician but this will not be public till the album is released

8)What groups or musicians, or artist(s) influences you the most?
That I cannot answer as I never really think about my influences, I have always listened music and played as well ,and find just as much influence in nature and my own feelings and thoughts ,as in other bands. If u ask me what kind of music i listen to then I would say I have a wide specter, whatever fits the mood and feeling in the moment, but blackmetal is probably what fits my soul best and always have.
9)How has the fan reaction been to your music so far?
The reaction have been great, I would say no other. My music may not be for all but that was never the intention, I create for myself and if someone like my creations that is then good.

10) What is the recording process like for you? at home? studio?
It has varied, I record most at home in my homestudio ,but some tracks have also been recorded in another studio as some sounds etc are recorded outside

11)What underground acts or bands would you like to mention or associate with? and like to bring up?
I assosiate with noone, just me. I have many bands I do like and have full respect for in their work but cannot really say that I feel associated with anyone in particular.
I would however like to ask you check out Svartalv-epic Norwegian oldschool atmospheric blackmetal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u95Nw0-97tw and Conjuration -Death Metal from Norway: http://www.myspace.com/conjurationnorway

12)What are your long term goals or plans for next year in 2011?
I am working on other band projects together with people so I belive that will take much time, The Nåe album will be released this year and besides that my plan is only to be as creative as I can.
I shall also be dedicated to my work with Concept Machine I:A ,
which is a Production Company - For Music Videos / Music recording / Movie Scripts and concepts for Books, Graphic Novels and t.v series / Artwork /Photography & Cover/Album artwork and design.
13)What is the scene like in your area?
In my area.. I am located far up in Norway and the scene is most nature and not people..luckily ;)

14)how long have you been part of this style of music or been involved in it?
As in blackmetal? Forever

15)How long do you think you will keep making music for?
As long as I will create, and that will be for a long time hopefully

16)What do you think of the underground bands of today?
there are some really great underground bands for sure. I find more feeling and can relate more often to the essence in the music of many of these bands, but by all means there are a lot of great bands that not are underground as well.
17)What bands would you like to see live or do promotion for?
I am promoting some selected bands through Nyx concept,so I am not planning to promote anyone besides that except from the bands I have been and shall work together with, that of course deserve my full support!

18)Is their you believe a trend of music today that should be put away with or is ruining the style or image of what the "real metal music" or old edge metal is?
(dont understand this question .....)

19)If you could do something positive or negative in this world, what would it be? and why?
I am and will take care of myself and my closest, and nothing but that! All for themselves and that suits me fine
20) I really am glad to finally interview Elenyx, and what do you have to say to your friends, family, peers, fans, fellow bands and the good people of this world? :) Take care! -D -l-

As always, thanx for the support and great feedback,-take care as well!
-If you follow the path of others you are nothing but a beast on the fields and have wasted your soul!

+ EPIC NORWEGIAN OLDSCHOOL ATMOSPHERIC BLACK METAL + not ever available untill now ! Taken from the Demo Album - Winterbound

FROZEN CADAVER - FROZEN IN DEATH REVIEW (By Salvatore)

The opening intro to the demo by New York’s Frozen Cadaver is reminiscent of a B movie horror flick, eerie organ keys end with a blast of horns, making it seem like something is about to pop out at you. That which pops out at you in the beginning of “The Ugly” is a sample of what seems to be a conversation between a killer who hears voices and a psychiatrist or police officer.  I expected a gore grind song after that, but was given a very strange mix of D-beat drumming, guitar supersaturated with distortion and vocals that at times almost sound like they could be on an Obituary tune. Frozen Cadaver are not setting out to raise the bar, but merely write simple songs about murder and gore and have fun with it.  There are some things you really wouldn’t expect here, but for the most part I think this is just a few guys who have an intense love for horror movies and want to express that through some simple metal tunes.

Back Online, and I got TONS of things to do....

Hey guys, its Danny of Transylvanian Forest E-zine, I am back online, I had a 2 month long absence, and I got things to post, reviews, interviews, exclusives, and more, but before I do all that I want to post a advertisement of my latest split ep tribute album that I done with my friend of the band Nordjn. You can order a copy at http://www.satanica.org/ in the latest albums section under black metal. Here is the album info below, and I hope you buy a copy.

Other news, Salvatore, has become a new reviewer for TF e-zine, and his new review will be posted after this post in a bit.  Dracolord still reviews for me, but he is busy with college atm. I got ALOT of reviews to post, and emails saved to go over of things to do, so I will be a bit overwhelmed within the next couple of weeks, so ALL the reviews/interviews I have to do NOW, are all that I am doing till they are done and completed. Therefore I am NOT accepting any more reviews/interviews unless you came to me before I posted this... thanks for understanding.

A new interview for myself will be posted in a bit with the lovely Anitra DeLorenza interviewing me! That will be up possibly tonight or tomorrow night, and new reviews for Dave Wolfs zine AEA zine. Please be patient, I got alot to cover, clean up on my laptop,  I should be back in order, and organized within the next couple of weeks... -D
