Suicidal Angels “Sanctify the Darkness” Review (by Kate Wilcox)

Nuclear Blast

Whoa, holy mosh pit batman!! I believe I’ve just been transported back to 1987 in the Bay Area, the heart of the thrash scene! Ohhhhhh, this is good shit metalheads, you might want to pay attention. Nick Melissourogos’s vocals carry a heavy Sepultura influence but delivered in classic Tom Araya style. Hailing from Greece these guys have good old fashioned thrash flowing their veins, some bands just fake it til they make it but Suicidal Angels have a true passion for it and play it just for the love of it. Characteristics I always admire and respect.

The opening track, “Bloodthirsty” comes at you with you full on aggression and brutality, the guitar playing between Nick and Panos is just incredible and music to the ears. “Inquisition” comes chugging in with classic Slayer deliverance, making you bang your head until you can’t anymore. “Apokathilosis” is an awesome track that would put early Metallica to shame. “Atheist” comes in with high energy riffs and chugs along with Nick’s raspy and dark vocals.

“Mourning of the Cursed” is a great instrumental track although I would have like it to be a bit longer. You can tell these guys mesh well together when they play, there’s no awkwardness just a constant flow of intense metal. The dark undertone keeps it interesting like in the closing track “Child Molester” and is accentuated by Nick’s sinister vocals.

No new ground has been broken but then again there’s no need to, Suicidal Angels has brought back something really great from the early thrash metal era and made it their own. “Sanctify the Darkness” will keep you wanting more from start to finish!!
